Dear Santa

So Luke tells me I’ve been deficient in blogging recently. I suppose that is what happens when you try to move and prepare for the holidays all at once. Anyway here is my attempt to regenerate my routine blogging skills.

Mara visited Santa at the Jamestown Methodist Church. My friend Melissa’s MOPS (moms of preschoolers) group was having a craft show at the church. We felt it would be a good, low key, no pressure way for Mara to be introduced to Santa. Turns out it worked pretty well. You can see she did still need to warm up to Santa a bit. We stayed in the room with him a good 10 mins. before I subjected her to “the lap”!

Yikes whose lap have they sat me on?

This guy doesn’t seem so bad…what a great color on him!

Did you say he’d bring me toys?

Good ‘Ole Cracker Barrel Fun

Filed under: General — Steph @ 8:38 am

Last night for dinner we ate at the local Cracker Barrel. For us the night turned out to be just a hoot! During our 10-15 minute wait for the table we sit Mara down on the floor in front of the ferret thingy that chases a ball. They had it all caged up so it wouldn’t make its way around the whole store floor. Just around the corner I spotted a random chicken hanging out. So I picked it up and sit it in front of Mara and the hilarity began to ensue. This chicken does the chicken dance and if you pick it up by the neck it will act as if you are choking it. Mara wanted to bite its beak and grab it. We had a store crowd going on at the scene. I would not be exaggerating to say at least 10 people. Everyone kept saying she was so cute and funny! The store manager and even workers were gathering. It was great fun but that was only the start.

After we sit down I decided to see what Mara would do with the lemon in my tea. She really seemed to like it at first and then these pictures we taken! She must’ve enjoyed it though because she kept grabbing for it.

What can I say I’m a gluton for punishment. Hehe Haha

After dinner a family came up to us and said they had enjoyed watching her the whole time during dinner. She was such a show! That’s our girl!

Pet The Doggie

This past Sunday the 31st of July we visited Nana’s house along with Jen, Conan and their I.G. Striker. Mara seems very interested in all the movements of Striker and here she is pictured giving him a “gentle” petting. I’m sure this will change at some point but for now she is gentle with Striker. We all ate Sunday dinner together which was very fun. I noticed that my mom (Nana) and Jen both have blue eyes like Mara. Now it occurs to me, why in the world was I wondering where her blue eyes came from….it was rather obvious that day.

First Tooth Is A Comin’

Filed under: General — Luke @ 9:43 pm

Well, our suspicions to Mara’s seeming crankiness at times are coming true. Her first tooth is just peeking out of her gums now. You can feel the ridges on it. Stay tuned for a picture of it when it pops up.

Update: First picture of Mara’s teeth posted.

New Pen Pal

Filed under: General — Luke @ 10:26 pm

Well at least once Mara is able to write, then maybe there will be a new pen pal. Congratulations to our friends Brian, Tara and Dani on the arrival of Grace Olivia to the family! We are so happy for them.

P.S. Whoever supplies those blankets has it made! Everyone uses them!

Bath Time Blues

If there is one thing that can regularly get our baby girl cranked up it is the bath. She only gets one every other night at this point but boy does she dislike it. Everyone else we talk to says their children love the bath and it relaxes them but not Mara. She gets her bath in the Primo bathtub (thanks Nilou) which is perfect for her small body. It is designed to be used for when babies are very small and for when they get larger. Then we take her out of the bath, dry her off and put on a diaper. Once that is done we take her over to the sink to wash her hair at this point in time. It just seems easier and we want to be very careful not to get water in her ears.

The classical music I’d play during bath time to create a relaxing atmosphere never seemed to do much of anything except create an even noisier environment with all the crying. You know Luke & I keep trying to tell her that there is no crying in the bathtub (adaptation from the movie A League of Their Own) but she doesn’t seem to be reasoned with at this age.

Yesterday when Luke & I went to Babies R Us. I took Shannon’s advice to get some play toys for the bath because it worked for Parker. We got some little sea creatures called “squirts” that you fill up with water and well…squirt! No tears for the first time ever during the bath and shampoo last night. We will see if this continues or if it was just a fluke but until then enjoy this very funny picture of Mara’s first bath ever! Was she a little surprised or what?

Mara Is Well

Filed under: General — Luke @ 10:22 pm

This is just a quick post to let everyone know that Mara is doing just fine. The last remnants of her cold are almost gone. So much so we are not doing anything special anymore to treat symptoms.

Next, the Grandparents from NY will be visiting this weekend. They should be in tomorrow. Stay tuned to see if they make it in a posting….

NO NO Not The Bulbous Booger Sucker

Filed under: General — Steph @ 10:23 pm

Today our little one seems to be congested. No matter how many times her nostrils have been cleared with the bulb syringe we still hear congestion so we decided to break out the warm mist humidifier. Let’s hope that helps. We knew something must be wrong besides the gurgling noise coming from her nose when she wasn’t sleeping well. This little angel, since 11 weeks of life, has been sleeping through the night consistently from between 7 and 8 at night to between 7 and 8 in the morning. Every hour or so tonight when we put her down for the night she woke up cranky. We called the peds office and the nurse tells me babies don’t breathe through their mouth. They tend to wake up if they suck their thumb (she does) and are congested due to lack of breathing. Interesting I thought. She recommended the humidifier, pediacare (Luke went out to get some), and saline nose drops. You are supposed to only put one drop in one nostril then you must suction it out and do the same in the next nostril. The scary thing is that if you put the drops in both at the same time they could drown! YIKES! Who knew?

“Little Luke In A Dress”

Filed under: General — Steph @ 9:45 pm

I affectionately refer to her as “Little Luke In A Dress” because I see more of Luke in her appearance however Luke seems to think she has some of my personality traits. By those I think he means impatient and demanding…hehe

Recently she has discovered her toes and grabs them. But she doesn’t seem to be as interested (so far) in them as her hands. We laugh at the fact that she randomly stops in the middle of whatever she might be doing to devote a 15 second stare of amazement to her hands.

Still of all her activities nothing comes close to the enjoyment she gets out of her Einstein Mat. This has been the case since 8 weeks of age. The star makes her smile consistently, no other toy can do this. I swear that smile is so bright she could light up the city of Greensboro. It really is the cutest with all that gumminess. So let me take a moment here to thank my friends, Kay Miller and Kathy Laskey who gave us the E-mat.

This is our first week with the nanny since daddy daycare packed up and went back to work at RFMD. Our nanny, Kathy, has made mine and Luke’s transition from one of us caring for her, to someone outside our family an easier one. For this we are tremendously grateful! She is doing an excellent job picking up where we left off by doing the things we find most important like giving her undivided attention and talking with our little chatty patty….another trait Luke thinks came from my side of the gene pool. This is day three of having our nanny Kathy, and Mara already seems to recognize and stare at her which is a good thing. With Kathy’s permission we will take a picture of the two of them together and post it here by the end of the week so stay tuned.

Update: Wanted to add a picture of the feet exploration in action!

Late Night Discovery

Filed under: General — Luke @ 10:48 pm

OK, I know it is late, but I am excited. I think I just got the Photopress plugin working for this site, so what it means is that very soon I should have a picture up in a post. In fact, we will try and get a fresh picture of Mara up here tomorrow as soon as we can!
