Party Time 2009

Filed under: Pictures — Luke @ 11:06 pm

This past Saturday Mara celebrated her birthday with a little gathering at Jump n’ Fun. This is probably her favorite type of place to hold a party, so basically she picked it out. However, we did have to select from a few choices of jumping establishment in the area and mom and dad got to make that choice. Although I do remember having to convince her that we couldn’t afford pump it up as a reason why we weren’t going there. Do you really convince a 4 year old?

Everyone seemed to have a good time. After a possible melt down on the party hat situation (thanks Keith and Davis) Mara lightened up and was able to blow out her candles on her cake. After the jumping, they rush you through the reception room pretty fast so a quick bite to eat and the cake and we were out of there. Mara says, “thanks for all the gifts!”

Swinging Monkey

One of the favorite things for the kids to do is go to the playground in the neighborhood. Its a simple one, with swings, a slide and a couple of other things. Mara has been getting more and more bold with the jungle gym. Once she wouldn’t go past the first rung, and now she has made it all the way to the top on the last couple trips to play there.

This video was taken in December. You will see that she likes spending time on the jungle gym so much she is willing to go without seeing Mr. Sprinkles, her best buddy, as well as just live on the apparatus for a few weeks. Needless to say, that did not happen, and she came down with her latest unique dismount.

New Photog

Filed under: Pictures — Luke @ 8:56 pm

One of the items that Mara got for Christmas was a digital camera. It is probably one of the favorites of what she got. When she got home from NY, and we got that out of the package, she wasn’t able to put it down. She has watched Mommy take so many pictures she just wanted to do it on her own too.

She proceeded to take pictures of just about anything. She posed her stuffed animals for shots too. Here are some of her favorites.

She was really happy with her Christmas tree shot.

Yeah, the quality isn’t very good at all. We knew that from the reviews we had read. But at this point, quality isn’t the fun. Taking the pictures and seeing them on the LCD on the back and then putting them on the computer is all the fun she needs.

I wish that I could say that you can click on these to see all the pictures she took, but you can’t. Sorry. The plugin we use to load photos and do the gallery on the website is a little broken right now and I need to come up with a new solution.

Quick On Her Feet

Filed under: General — Luke @ 8:36 pm

I just had to post this. Mara has reached the point where she is pretty intuitive and is able to connect the dots.

We went to Red Robin for dinner and every time we go we get balloons. Well, when walking out I had seen that Mara was taking the string from the balloon and wrapping it around her finger about twenty times. At a later point I said to her that she should not wrap the string around her finger like that. Of course the patent three year old question arose.

“Why?”

“Well, because you can cut off the circulation to your finger and hurt it, then we will have to go to the doctor and have them cut your thumb off when it doesn’t work anymore. You wouldn’t want to have your thumb cut off would you?” I said.

“No,” Mara replied.

Sometimes you have to go to extremes to get children to listen, right? OK, yeah, it was a little morbid. And writing it here makes me think I really shouldn’t have done it. But, I did.

Later on the ride home we were chatting. Then Campbell piped up complaining about something. With his balloon I had tied it on the outside of his jacket around his arm pit and shoulder. He doesn’t like having it tied because he wants to just hold it, so if you tie it he complains and cries. If you just hand it to him he loses the balloon within minutes to the sky gods, so at that point he cries. A lose lose situation of course.

Anyways, he was complaining and yanking on the string, and generally motioning to the balloon.

I said, “What, did you keep pulling on the string and get it tight around your arm so that now it hurts?”

And all I heard was, “We’re gonna have to cut his arm off. Yeah, Campbell, we’re gonna have to cut your arm off little buddy.”

A Fun Halloween

Filed under: Pictures — Luke @ 11:08 pm

A fun Halloween is what Mara called it. Last night the kids got all dressed up for a night on the neighborhood. Mara’s neighbor Sophie and sister Allyssa were nice enough to come over and ask her to come out and trick or treat with them. Mara was nice enough to allow her Dad and brother to tag along. We all went out with some of the neighbors and made a run of it. Although the older children kept ahead of us, Mara and Sophie tagged along with each other bringing up the rear. It took a little while for Mara to travel up to the doors by herself, but she got the hang of it quickly. Campbell made only about half the doors. The kids were very cute.

Mara’s energy lasted quite a long time, and Dad’s arm was good enough to last just as long carrying Campbell, for all of us to go up a street or two in the neighborhood. The kids got enough candy to last them a little while.

Where is RITchie?

Filed under: Pictures — Luke @ 12:12 am

Although we didn’t get a chance to see RITchie (what… you don’t know who RITchie is?), the kids had a good time visiting Dad’s old stomping grounds up in Rochacha, Rochester, NY. It was alumni weekend and the last time there were no kids in the mix, and now there are.

Mara and Campbell really did an excellent job on the plane ride up. Pat and Ort were excellent hosts and the kids settled in nicely. The first day it was a trip to Strong Museum where the kids had a blast. They got to see Curious George and really got a kick out of that.

He’s so big!

The museum was extremely large and there really was no way for us to get through it all. We had to leave in the early afternoon because the kids were getting tired. However, that didn’t stop them from riding the carousel, seeing some fish, visiting Sesame Street, and seeing the butterfly exhibit.

The next day there was a lot of relaxing at the house in the morning. Campbell woke up at 4:30am! Later in the afternoon was the lacrosse game on campus and the kids got to see Dad play for the first time. Now they have some idea what those sticks are for in the garage, and why Dad tries to get them to pick them up and toss the ball around. Afterward, Mara said that she wants to play lacrosse. Lets see what she does.

Ice Cream, Like Kryptonite

Filed under: General — Luke @ 12:34 am

If there was ever anything that was a weakness for this family, it has to be ice cream and the calorie deluge it bombards us with. So, since that is the case we could not resist attending the 14th Annual Ice Cream & Music Festival on Saturday at Guilford College. This is about the 4th year we have gone. I hate to say that it is getting a little weaker through the time we have gone, but hopefully it will turn around. The bright side is that this is the first year where the kids could start to enjoy the rides a little bit more. So that meant fun for them and a dent in the wallet. Since when did kiddie rides get so expensive? Ah, all for a good cause.

Auntie Jen and Grace were in town for a visit. Nana came along too, so it was quite a few of the family enjoying the scene. The kids had a great time indulging in the hot dogs, corn dogs, and of course, ice cream. Dancing and rides were a bonus. Click on any of the pictures to go into the gallery.

“Look Mom, I made a scary face”

Filed under: General — Steph @ 8:11 pm

That is literally what she said when I saw her with all the green marker on her face this morning before I walked out the door for work.
Obviously I had to let her know markers don’t belong on her face however it was so funny I couldn’t help but laugh so I tried to turn my head at least!
Maybe you’ll get a big giggle of out of her like I did this morning!

Looking More Her Lineage

Filed under: Pictures — Luke @ 10:47 pm

We have always wondered where exactly did Mara get her curly hair from? Mom doesn’t have curly hair, maybe its just a little bit wavy. Dad certainly doesn’t have curly hair. There isn’t a lot of history of curly hair in the family.

So, today when Lisa took some time to work Mara’s curls out of her hair, we saw for the first time what Mara would look like with her hair more like her parents. Dad came home to a surprise. Asking Mara, where did her curl’s go, she stood up and said, “no, my curls aren’t gone, my hair is just straight.” I couldn’t convince her that if her hair was straight, her curls must have gone somewhere. So I never got an answer from her where they went.
